Michiel Henkens
Michiel Henkens, born in 1991 in Weert, received his Bachelor of Medicine with distinction (cum laude) at Maastricht University in 2014. Simultaneously, he also received his Bachelor degree of Health Sciences there. For his Bachelor of Health Sciences he wrote his thesis at the pathology department, under supervision of Dr. C. Peutz (Title: “Determining Capillary Rarefaction in the Kidney after Transient Hypertension at Different Ages in Cyp1a1-Ren2 Transgenic Rats”). During his studies Michiel engaged in several other research and teaching related activities, for instance tutoring (at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences) and being a research-assistant at the Medical Center’s department of Pathology, both at Maastricht University. Michiel received his Master of Medicine in 2017, also with distinction (cum laude). His master thesis was written under supervision of ass. Prof. B. Schroen and Prof. Dr. S.R.B. Heymans (Title: “The Role of Mir-221 and Mir-222 in Hypertension Induced Left Ventricular Remodelling: A Histological Approach”). He subsequently began working as a research-assistant at the department of cardiology while finishing his internships. His PhD-track will mainly focus on the integration of biomarkers and clinical parameters for early diagnosis of HFPEF. In his personal life Michiel enjoys sports, with a particular passion for cycling.
